Can I participate in the Koshu samurai battalion parade at the Shingen-ko festival?

You can apply for the "Honjintai" and "Sanjofujin" parading groups; details on how to enter are posted on the Shingen-ko festival website every year in January.
In case there are too many applications, participants will be chosen at random through a lottery system. The cost to take part in the parade is around ¥15,000.

It is entirely possible to enjoy the samurai parade for free, but if you wish to see the performance on the main stage from up close, we do recommend that you purchase a seat beforehand. Seat tickets go on sale at the beginning of March on a first-come-first-served basis.

It is my first time visiting Kofu. What are some of the things I can do here?

Kofu is in close proximity to Tokyo; lush nature, delicious fruits and rich history await just 90 minutes away from Shinjuku station by train or expressway bus. The city's main sightseeing spots are Shosenkyo gorge, known as one of the most beautiful in all of Japan; the fields of fresh peaches and pears in the summer, grapes in the fall and strawberries in the winter and spring, where you can go fruit picking at your leisure; and the numerous landmarks filled with history that trace all the way back to the warring states period, when famous warlord and Kofu hero Takeda Shingen reigned over the land.

Other spots that you will not want to miss include the famous Yumura hot-spring resort and the breathtaking views of the Kofu basin and Mt. Fuji from atop the various surrounding mountains, easily accessible from the city.

Where can I do fruit picking activities?

As the capital city of the fruit kingdom of Japan, Kofu is ripe with opportunities for fruit picking:
Strawberries: end of January to beginning of May*
Pears : beginning of August to mid-August*
Grapes: August to end of October*
*depending on the climate

You can also enjoy peach (early July to end of August) and cherry picking (June) in the city's surrounding area.
Fresh and reasonably priced fruits and vegetables are available in local stores as well.

Kofu station has many nearby restaurants, cafés and bars.
The Kofu Food Village, a long and narrow alley of lanterns, is home to many spots beloved by locals, ranging from fancy restaurants to homey bars, where you can enjoy Yamanashi prefecture's finest wine, beers and traditional sake.

No worries if you cannot speak Japanese; some restaurants have "point-and-speak" conversation sheets available to help you communicate smoothly with the staff, called "Kofu Omotenashi Shops". Check the link below for more information.

If you do not mind a bit of walking, Kofu has many easily accessible trails leading up to viewpoints that offer breathtaking views of the city's nightscape and the Kofu basin, with Mt. Kofu has several indoor facilities that are perfect on a rainy day.
- Just a 10 minute walk from Kofu station, you will find: the Sadoya winery, the Fujimura Memorial Hall, the Yamanashi Jewelry Museum, the Museum of Modern Yamanashi Historical Figures, and the Yamanashi Chuo Bank Financial Data Museum.

What are some spots one can enjoy in the morning? Do some souvenir shops open early?

Located just a 3-minute walk away from Kofu station, Maizuru Castle Park is one of the best spots to enjoy early in the morning, as you can take in the entire scenery of the Kofu basin with Mt. Fuji and the Southern Alps in the distance from the observation platform at the top of the castle.
In the summer, you can escape from the heat by going on an refreshing, early morning hike to one of the 25 famous peaks of Kofu, for an amazing view of the Kofu basin from the top; the most easily accessible ones from the city center include Mt. Atago (Atagoyama Children's Park) and Mt. Hakusan.

The souvenir shop next to the Kofu station ticket gate opens from 8:00 in the morning.

Where can I go experience nature?

Shosenkyo gorge, Takeda no Mori Forest, Mt. Atago and Mt. Hakusan all make for perfect outdoor outings.
If you are walking from Kofu station, we recommend Mt. Atago. If you have a car or plan on going by bus or taxi, or if you enjoy long walks, Shosenkyo gorge, Takeda no Mori Forest and Mt. Hakusan are your best choices.

Where can I take part in a winery tour? Are there tours in English?

Kofu is home to 4 wineries:

How can I apply for a personal tour guide?

Three kinds of guided tours are available in Japanese:
・Kofu city guided tour (free): reservation required at least 10 days in advance through the Kofu Tourism Association

・Kofu castle guided tour (free): guides at the Kofu castle are stationed there and can normally be seen wearing a red vest (you can also apply in advance).

How do I use the city bus?

Please enter through the door located at the rear of the bus. As you board, hold your IC card over the card reader. If you are paying with cash, take a ticket from the machine located just inside: look at the electronic display near the driver to check your fare based on the number on your ticket. The bus fare will be displayed in units of 10 yen.

When nearing your stop, push the glowing yellow button on the wall or back of the seat in front of you. This will alert the driver that you need to depart.

Where can I go from Kofu station?

Kofu station has the Chuo line (Tokyo⇔Kofu⇔Nagano) and the Minobu line (Kofu⇔Shizuoka), meaning you can travel not only within the prefecture but also outside all the way to Tokyo, Nagano and Shizuoka without transfer.

Bear in mind that you can use your IC card on the Chuo line, but not on the Minobu line. You will need to purchase an individual ticket.

How can I go to the Mount Fuji and Kawaguchiko area?

From Kofu, you can go directly to Kawaguchiko station by taking the Fujikyuko bus (1h20 minute ride, ¥1,500), or take the train from Kofu station and transfer at Otsuki for the Fujikyuko line (2-hour ride, ¥2,030).

For Mount Fuji, take the Fujikyuko bus from Kofu station to Mt. Fuji station (1h35 minute ride, ¥1,600) and transfer for a bus bound for Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station (1-hour ride, ¥1,570 one way/¥2,300 round trip).
